  • Saturday, August 16: Dave and I did a full evening at Licorice & Sloe, a cozy coffeehouse at 21 Middle St. in Newburyport. All sorts of folks stopped by, and I managed to get the owner dancing up a storm, which is a good sign, and a stranger wandered in and bought one of my CDs. Not bad for three hours' work.

July

  • Thursday, July 31: I featured, all by my lonesome, at the Amazing Things Arts Center in Framingham, hosted by the gracious and dynamic Dan Cloutier. A small but appreciative crowd heard a bunch of new stuff, including "The Wreck of the Chicken Piccata", about which very little more needs to be said...
  • Thursday, July 10: Dave and I played a full evening at the Harvest Cafe, 40 Washington St. in Hudson. What a lovely place - the food is excellent, the owner is smart and enthusiastic, and the dining room is very pleasant. It's a shame there was no one in the dining room while I was playing, but I'll just have to work on that.

June

  • Thursday, November 15: Dave and I played a nice long set to a few lucky people at the Rose Room in Uxbridge.

May

April

  • Thursday, April 26: Dave and I were spectacular at Mike Delaney's adorable open mike at the new Java Jo's, 3710 Washington St. in Jamaica Plain. I was in such rare form that I spent about 10 minutes too long on stage - oopsie.
  • Sunday, April 22: I appeared as one of many acts at the annual Habitat for Humanity benefit at the Mozaic Room, 119 North Main St. in Avon. I heard some really good music - check out Dave Potts if you ever have the chance - but was kind of disappointed in my own performance.
  • Saturday, April 14: Dave and I almost opened for Valerie and Walter Crockett and the Oxymorons at the Steeple Coffeehouse, 15 Common St., Southborough, MA. Walter had bronchitis, and we opened for the Blackstone Valley Bluegrass Band instead, run by, among other people, Walter's bass player, Bob Dick. BVBB were just fabulous, the room was full, I sold some CDs. Thanks again to Gary Kavanaugh for having us.

March

  • Saturday, March 31: Rob Mattson set up a lovely evening for him, me, and Stephanie Corby at the Acme Theater, 61 Summer St. in Maynard. Rob said that people would come, and they did - always amazing to me. Stephanie has a voice from God, and Rob played the best set I've seen him do. The audience laughed in all the right places, and I sold a bunch of CDs. If every gig were like this, I'd be a happy man.

February

  • Monday, February 12: I was a last-minute fill-in feature at the Front St. Coffeehouse in Salem. Host Paul Duffy was kind enough to think of me when harmonica player Bill Evans fell ill. Dave joined me, and took the opportunity to add some sound effects from the brick wall behind the stage. Lovely room, nice crowd. This month was the event's seventh anniversary, which is an eon in open mike years.

January

  • Saturday, January 6: I was the host of the venerable Nameless Coffeehouse. The bill that night was Brooke Brown Saracino, Tim FitzPatrick with Amy Basse, Lloyd Thayer, and Hard Times, plus a couple songs from yours truly. The room was absolutely full - people were sitting on the stage. Lloyd Thayer is an amazing performer. And I'm a pretty good host.

2006

December

  • Thursday, December 28: Thanks to a last-minute plea by my pal Dan Cloutier, I was the feature, and host, at the open mike at the Amazing Things Arts Center. Dave brought an army of people, and there were a record-tying number of open mike signups, much to my astonishment. Somebody said I was "fantastic". Say it again.

November

  • Friday, November 17: Did an open mike feature at the Mozaic Room in Avon, for a small but appreciative audience. One of my favorite rooms - Steve and Pete have always been really nice to me.

October

  • Friday, October 13: Dave and I returned for my approximately annual feature at Java Jo's in Milton, one of my favorite haunts. No cover, lots of pastry, and Anne Eder-Mulhane, the sweetest open mike host in the world. Opened with the brand-new "I'm Not a Modest Man", after finishing it that afternoon - went over pretty well, for Friday the 13th.

August

  • Monday, August 21: Dave and I featured at the Milky Way in JP. This was a pretty fun gig. Yes, it's a bar and a bowling alley, but there was a nice variety of acts, and the host plays cello in a trio which sounds like a cross between the Doors and Depeche Mode. Thanks to Dave for drawing a few people.
  • Thursday, August 3: Dave and I featured at the Rose Room Revue at the Rose Garden, 16 Milford St., Upton MA. I'd heard an enormous amount about this venue over the years, and host Matt Lindi was just the best. An attentive, albeit small, crowd, a good meal, a big chunk of stage time, and a nice chunk of change in the hat. We were excellent, not brilliant, but we both had a great time.

July

  • Sunday, July 9: Dave and I shared a bill at Club Passim with Mark Stepakoff, on the occasion of his CD release of "There Goes the Neighborhood." Steve Friedman taped the show. I was awfully happy with my performance this particular evening. Sold a couple of CDs. Most of the crowd was Mark's, but people seemed to like me fine anyway.
  • Wednesday, July 5: Dave and I featured at the Narrows at 16 Anawan St. in Fall River. I love this converted old mill - high ceilings, exposed beams, church pews for seats. My pal Marilyn Edge happened by, and I had a nice long chat with host Rick Fetters.

May

  • Saturday, May 6: Wow. I got to open for funnyman John Forster at the Amazing Things Arts Center, thanks to Michael Moran. The crowd was marvelously attentive, and I played one of my best short sets ever. Sold nine CDs, including the last copy of Life is Like a River.

April

  • Thursday, April 27: I featured at the Amazing Things Arts Center, hosted by impresario Dan Cloutier. I really enjoyed this show, even though I was playing without my faithful percussionist.
  • Wednesday, April 19: Hell, I'll count this one. While I was down in Austin, visiting friends and buying cowboy boots, our pal Gregg Andrews invited me to swap songs with him at a happy hour at Cheatham Street in San Marcos. We had a fine time - Gregg's friend Tony chipped in on lead guitar, and Margaret on fiddle. I eventually ran out of tunes which were even vaguely appropriate, but we were done by then anyway.

March

  • Wednesday, March 1: I featured alone at the Sit'n'Bull open mike at 163 Main St. in Maynard. Dave snoozed and lost the evening to his wife, so he had to stay home with the kids. I switched to my new guitar in mid-set, by popular demand. This was a good set for me; I tried to work on a number of stage presence suggestions that my performance coaches have been making, and I felt that it worked really well.

February

  • Saturday, February 25: Dave and I opened for my pals Valerie and Walter Crockett and the Oxymorons at the Green Rooster Coffeehouse at 6 Institute Road in Worcester. The weather was crappy, but the room was pretty full. It was a really nice room - high ceilings, big stage, well run. The Crocketts were in rare form, and Dave and I were really tight.

January

  • Saturday, January 28: Dave and I opened for my hero JP Jones at a house concert in Acton hosted by the estimable and delightful Susan Irene Master. This was just a lovely night all round. Susan is a spectacular host - the food was delicious, the house was warm and welcoming. The audience was generous and appreciative. Dave and I were really tight - possibly the best gig I've ever played. And JP, well, JP was magnificent, there's no other word for it. Man, that guy blows me away. In other words, I couldn't be more pleased with how it went.

2005

December

  • Friday, December 16: Dave and I featured at Skip Jackson's cozy Five Star Fridays at the Stagecoach Inn in Groton. Chris Pahud was the special guest. A night of deep baritone was had by all.

November

  • Saturday, November 19: Dave and I opened for the legendary Jack Hardy at the Mozaic Room in Avon. Ah, the big time. Big thanks to Steve Gretz for entrusting me with this slot. I broke a string at the end of the first song and had to borrow Jack's guitarist's guitar (thank you, Bruce Balmer). Sold a couple CDs, watched Jack get covered with groupie drool. He played a great, great set, that's for sure.
  • Friday, November 4: Dave and I were the feature at the Red Door Coffeehouse, hosted by the estimable Tom Driscoll, whom I've almost forgiven for misspelling "mike". Excellent, excellent show - big crowd (at least for the Red Door), interesting song selections, and Dave and I were in top form. I played "Me and Walter Mitty" for the first time in a while, due to the presence of the piano.

October

  • Thursday, October 13: I was the feature, all by my lonesome, at the brand new Java Jo's in Jamaica Plain, hosted by Mike Delaney. This was a very, very appreciative audience - lots of applause and an encore. Thanks so much.

July

  • Friday, July 29: Dave and I returned to the site of my very first gig, a feature at Java Jo's in Milton, still hosted by the estimable Anna Eder-Mulhane. I rushed a couple songs, and my voice was a little ragged in places, but overall, one of the best sets we've ever done - the patter was just about perfect, and the performance was extremely high-energy in the right places. Dave is doing a part for "Nantucket" which involves only cymbals, and it's just mesmerizing. Somebody walked up to me afterward and said, "I just have to shake your hand after a performance like that." Score.

April

  • Wednesday, April 20: At the kind invitation of Marilyn Edge, Dave and I feature at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River. Marilyn had sent out a threatening message about attendance to her mailing list the previous day, so the turnout was respectable. Dave and I rocked. The Narrows is a gorgeous room. And I heard someone do a cover of a song by Buddy Mondlock called "The Kid", which won the Kerrville Music Award for song of the year in 1996, and as far as I'm concerned, it could win the same damn award from now till the end of time, it's that good.

March

  • Wednesday, March 16: Dave and I were the inaugural feature at Jon Waterman's open mike at the Organic Garden in Beverly. Surprisingly well attended for the first night. The plate glass window behind Dave's drums was a little disorienting for a song or two, but we got a lot of good feedback.

February

  • Friday, February 18: I appeared alone as the special guest at the Stagecoach Inn Five Star Fridays event in Groton. The feature that evening was Gale Gardiner, who played the autoharp and classical guitar. I do like this room a lot, and Skip is a very enthusiastic host. He's now playing with a great bass player named David Comtois. I was fabulous, as usual...
  • Monday, February 7: Dave and I rocked the house at the Emerson Umbrella. The crowd was pretty good, and I'm very happy with my performance. Bill Kehoe was a good deal of fun as well. We both decided that David Fishken should be the next Pope.

January

  • Saturday, January 8: I was the pre-show (7:30 - 8:00) and intermission entertainment at the Theatre Cooperative, 277 Broadway, Somerville. The show that evening was a festival of ten minute plays called the Ritalin Readings. My old friend Nathan Pyritz is one of the folks behind this theatre. The room was completely full, and the audience was very receptive. This gig was a lot of fun - the readings were all excellent, and I sold two CDs. Small victories.

2004

December

  • Friday, December 31: John Schindler, Susan Master and I hosted an event entitled "How to Raise Your Own Voice", at the Hynes Auditorium as part of First Night 2005. Scott Alarik was the emcee, and the event was wondrously successful. We had good attendance, and handed out lots of literature, and sold some CDs, and had loads of fun. Hope you didn't miss it.
  • Monday, December 13: Matt Griffin, Lisa Bastoni and I entertained the bartender and a couple other folks at TT the Bear's on Brookline St. in Central Square, one of my favorite haunts from my ska band days. But I got to hear Matt and Lisa.

November

  • Thursday, November 18: "Lighten Up: Comedy Song Night" at the Folkal Point at Springstep in Medford, featuring - ta-da - me. There was a good crowd, and lots of laughs.

October

  • Saturday, October 16: In a sudden, delightful surprise, I was asked at the last minute to open for Walter and Valerie Crockett at Club Passim. I was incredibly flattered, and we had a great time, even though a lot of people were home watching the Red Sox approach their usual cliff. One of my best sets of the year.
  • Monday, October 11: My first feature at the venerable Cantab Lounge, Central Square in Cambridge. Dave and I had a good time. People at the bar were actually listening.

September

  • Sunday, September 26: Feature at the cozy and irreplaceable Salon Sundays, with Dan Hart and Marc Duval. Marc debuted an entirely new Mr. Twiddle performance, which truly had to be seen to be believed. "Marry Me, Jerry Falwell" is still the funniest thing Dan has written in ages. I was OK.
  • Saturday, September 18: I split an evening with the estimable and unpredictable Stanley Matis at Steve Howard's stage at Starbucks, 29 S Bolton St. in Marlborough. People came and listened, and Stanley made my ears hurt from laughing, once again.

August

  • Friday, August 13: Java Jo's, my first home. Dave and I played for the usual full room. Some of our former bandmates came out to hear us, but, as usual, they were late. Good gig, especially considering I'd been on vacation for two weeks and hadn't been on stage for a month.

July

  • Sunday, July 11: Dave and I rocked out at Danielle Miraglia's Sunday songwriter series at the Burren in Davis Square. Danielle was unavailable, but Tom Bianchi was more than up to the challenge of mugging for the crowd as I replaced my broken string. Michael Troy, as usual, was lovely. And we got a pretty good crowd, too.

June

  • Sunday, June 13: Dan Hart, Stanley Matis, Katherine Pritchard and I claimed the stage at Club Passim. A respectable crowd heard a grrrreat show. Dan Hart played his new gay marriage song, about which I almost fell off my stool laughing. And Stanley, well, Stanley sang "New Jersey", all 8 minutes of it, and Stanley fans like me were in heaven. Steve Friedman recorded every breathless moment of my time on stage, and you can look forward to a new live EP sometime in the not-too-distant future.
  • Saturday, June 12: At the Billerica Arts Festival, 15 Concord Rd., Billerica. It was kind of a light crowd, and I was last, and so I ended up playing "packing up" music. But it was fun anyway.

May

  • Sunday, May 16: Fishken & Groves sponsored a fundraiser for Huntington's disease at the Sit'n'Bull in Maynard, from noon to 9 PM. There were literally dozens of performers, including my buddy Deb Cowan, who I hadn't heard in ages. Apparently, the event raised about $1500. Go David and Buffy!

April

  • Saturday, April 10: Opening for John Schindler at a house concert hosted by Susan Master-Karnik. The room was full, Susan was a lovely host, lots of people new and old came, and I was about as good as I've ever been. Dave was really on as well. Names on the mailing list, CDs sold, great food. Best - gig - ever.
  • Sunday, April 4: At the King Hooper open mike, feature with Ken Keller. Dave TK spaced on this one, so I flew solo. This is a lovely room. Angela and Dan were about to head off to Greece, and I debuted "Icarus", which was kind of fitting, I thought. Ken played a lovely set. And it was Angela's birthday. A lovely time was had by all.

February

  • Wednesday, February 25: Open mike feature at the Sit'n'Bull, 163 Main St., Maynard. Dave and I had an excellent, excellent time. The crowd was very attentive, and Fishken says, "very pro". Blush, dimple.

January

  • Friday, January 23: 15 minute slot at Five Star Fridays at the Stagecoach Inn, Route 119 in Groton. Jon Waterman and I headed out. The Five Star is getting quite popular, and the night was full of lots of good performers. Sold a CD.
  • Sunday, January 11: Open mike feature at the Parish Center for the Arts, 10 Lincoln St., Westford. Dave and I rocked. My voice gave out halfway through the set, but I pulled it off like a pro. Small audience, but quite appreciative; we got a pretty enthusiastic encore, and I sold a CD.

2003

November

  • Saturday, November 1: The Nameless Coffeehouse. Danielle Miraglia, then me, then Karaugh Brown, then James O'Brien. James was incredible, as usual. I was pretty damn good myself, but I didn't feel like I was connecting with the audience as well as I'd like. But I got a few names on the mailing list and sold a couple CDs, and, hey, it's the Nameless. So I ain't complainin'.

October

  • Friday, October 31: Feature at the Stagecoach Inn in Groton. I still like this room, even though the crowd was kind of thin.
  • Saturday, October 4: Opening slot for Carl Cacho at the Folk in Harmony Coffeehouse. High ceilings, attentive crowd. Dave and I had a lot of fun. Carl was in fine form, and Charlie Strater backed him up (also did a song with me). A stranger bought my CD, so the night was a success.
  • Friday, October 3: 20 minutes at the Stagecoach Inn in Groton. I like this room, as you can tell. 20 minutes turned into 25. The feature, Scott Savoy, was excellent - I've seen him before. Check him out if you haven't heard him yet.

September

  • Saturday, September 27: Dave and I feature at the Colonial Inn open mike, hosted by the honorable Ellen Schmidt. We split the bill with with Charlie Strater, one of my faves. Charlie played "Cassandra" with me and Dave, and I played piano on Charlie's tune "Riding with Patricia" from his Thornhill Road album. We had so much fun with "Cassandra" that we did it together again at his gig at the Burren a couple Sundays later.
  • Friday, September 5: I played 20 minutes at Skip Jackson's Five Star Fridays at the Stagecoach in in Groton. The feature was Two Cat Folk. Very nice crowd, very pleasant room - I'll be back.
  • Monday, September 1: Part of a round with Dave Dersham, Joel Ninesling and Marc Herman at the Cutting Edge of the Campfire at Club Passim. We had a lovely time - I played piano on one of Dave's tunes, one of Joel's, and two of Marc's, and Marc accompanied me on guitar for "The Elephant in the Room" and "A Man Like Me". Plus the debut of "Trans Canada Two." Action packed, indeed.

July

  • Thursday, July 3: My triumphant return as the TCAN open mike feature, after a two-year absence. 31 Main Street, This was the first open mike at the new firehouse, and I did it acoustic. Strolled in from offstage singing, left the same way. Sold a couple of CDs. It wasn't quite an all-request feature as promised, but it was close.

June

  • Sunday, June 1: Feature at M.F. Daisy's lovely Salon Sundays open mike, Salon Sundays, 22 Pond St., Hyde Park. Dave brought his kids, who were delightful. Someone on the couch whispered loudly to her neighbor, "He has such a nice voice." That was me they were talking about.

May

  • Saturday, May 3: Jenn McKay, Jon Wasserman and I heated up the Gallery Cafe in East Bridgewater. Dave Troen-Krasnow came by and joined me for a number of tunes. The audience was thin but appreciative. Jon, Jenn and I did several songs together at the end of the evening.

February

  • Friday, February 28: Dave and I return triumphantly to Java Jo's in Milton and the friendly face of your host Anne Eder-Mulhane. For me, this was the best gig I've played in a long time, and Dave and I were really cookin'. If you weren't there, you missed something special. If I do say so myself.
  • Friday, February 14: Rob Siegel and I teamed up for a lonely but entertaining night at Java Jive at Starbucks, 44 Main St., Wayland, MA. Mark Stepakoff formed the majority of our audience. But Rob trotted out some deep, deep old material, and Dave joined me for the second set. This is a nice cozy room, and I'm told the java is excellent, but we just didn't draw.

2002

September

  • Thursday, September 26: Dave and I are the token testosterone at Patty Keough's Est Fest concert at the Kendall Cafe in Cambridge. We had an excellent time, especially since everyone else on the bill was fabulous: Jen Johnson, Patty, and especially Julie Woods, who raises the temperature of a room just by entering it. And a voice like butter. Don't miss her.

July

  • Wednesday, July 24: Open mike feature at the Sit'n'Bull open mike, hosted by Patty Keough. Dave joins me again, and we rock again. Many friends graced me with their presence, including Nick Post, John Schindler and Buffy Groves.
  • Wednesday, July 3: First gig in a year. Open mike feature at the River Street Grille open mike, hosted by Jimmy Dorr. Counterprogramming at Passim (Bruce Springsteen tribute night), not to mention the fact that everyone seemed to be out of town. Nonetheless, a great time was had by all. I played with Dave Troen-Krasnow, the drummer from my old band, Agent 13, for the first time; we hadn't been on stage together in more than 9 years. I made him play a song he'd never heard ("It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time", which I'd just finished), and he did just fine. We're going to do this again at the end of the month.

2001

June

  • Thursday, June 14: I featured at the Center for the Arts in Natick. The room was full, and I debuted "Hallucination", as well as dusting off an old song I've probably never performed, which Terence Hegarty had requested many moons ago.

April

  • Wednesday, April 18: Dave Dersham and I shared the open mike stage at the Acton Jazz Cafe, and had a lovely time. Dave drummed on "Life is Like a River", and I played piano for him on his waltz. As usual, Fishken tried to be obnoxious and failed. And a good time was had by all.

February

  • Friday, February 23: I was a special guest, along with Mieka Pauley, of Ross Martin at his farewell gig at the Washington Square Starbucks in Brookline. Ross and his family are moving to Stamford, CT, for bizarre reasons of financial stability or something. I wrote them a song (ain't I sweet).
  • Friday, February 2: I shared an evening at Perk's in Norwood with the estimable Matt Griffin. Someone liked my material so much they actually bought one of my CDs while I was performing. Now that's the kind of slavish devotion we're shooting for, folks.

January

  • Wednesday, January 24: Open mike feature at Mocha Java, 1267 River St., Cleary Square, Hyde Park. This was a wonderfully well-attended show in a lovely room, thanks to our host Jimmy Dorr. Thanks to all who came.

2000

October

  • Monday, October 23: At Mocha Java in Cleary Square, Hyde Park, with Daniel Jacobs and Danielle Miraglia.

September

  • Friday, September 1: At the Cutting Edge of the Campfire, from 1:30 to 3 PM, in the round with Oen Kennedy, Jacinta Whitcome and Mieka Pauley. The gig was surprisingly well-attended, and the rest of the weekend was just a crush of people. I did my new ridiculous piano song, "The Mistakes You've Made", just because I could. And a good time was had by all.

July

  • Thursday, July 13: Open mike feature at the Natick Center for the Arts, 31 Main Street, Natick. I played all the songs I never get a chance to play, including "Doesn't Anybody Want a Piece of Me", which went over quite well.

May

  • Saturday, May 27: At the Cutting Edge of the Campfire, at Club Passim. Boy, was this fun. I was in a rotation with Andrew Kerr, Chris Elliot and Chris Smith. Andrew Kerr is a joy to watch, and even more of a joy to be on stage with - I learned a lot. And Matt Smith did wonders with the weekend - the audiences were substantial and appreciative. Don't miss this even in the fall (even if I'm not in it).

April

  • Friday, April 7: New Song Folk Club, 1047 Front St., S. Weymouth, MA 02190, in the quasi-round with Terence Hegarty and Jim Rader. A small but appreciative crowd in a homey, cozy environment. Bob Alonge is doing a good job with the New Song. Terence outdraws Jim and me together.

1999

December

  • Sunday, December 19: At the Choppin Block Pub with Phil Allen and friends. This is a neighborhood bar on the outskirts of Mission Hill. I shared the room with Sunday evening football and a number of very polite locals.

October

  • Thursday, October 7: I was the open mike feature at the Center for the Arts in Natick, hosted by good friend Ken Batts. The evening featured a number of very strong performances from the open mikers, and I did my set without amplification. This is a beautiful room, and the audience was tremendously supportive. High point: a rendition of Terence Hegarty's "Voices".

September

  • Thursday, September 30: I made my North Shore debut in a 40 minute set at the Olde Village Beanery in Salem, MA, hosted by James O'Brien. This gig was rescheduled from September 16 due to Hurricane (hah!) Floyd. I performed with James and Greg Klyma, from Buffalo - I'd heard Greg before and enjoyed him again. This was a small room with a loyal crowd which James has cultivated over the last year or so.

August

  • Monday, August 23: A feature at the expanded Monday Club Passim open mike. I opened with "Vices", a song which I resurrected after fixing the chorus. The crowd was quite responsive.

July

  • Friday, July 30: A return to Java Jo's, one of my favorite haunts, as open mike feature. A good friend was visiting from California and got to hear me play. The place was hopping - good to see the Java Jo's open mike thriving on its new day.
  • Thursday, July 15: A feature at the Taiwan Cafe, Eric Gerber's new open mike. I played some songs I never play, including a cover of Terence Hegarty's "Voices". The audience was small and very appreciative, and we had a lovely time.

June

  • Sunday, June 27: A four-song opening slot at the Oak Hill Acoustic Series. This was a lovely show. The setting is quiet and intimate, and Steve Rapson and James O'Brien have put together a marvelous concert series. Jim Rader and I opened for Eric Schwartz, and Eric was in high gear, and the crowd loved it.

April

  • Wednesday, April 21: Songwriters in the Square at Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Cambridge, MA (617) 492-7679, at 8 PM, with the irrepressible Eric Schwartz, the unforgettable Summer Pierre, and the inimitable Eric Gerber. This was a wonderful, wonderful evening - I left more impressed with each of my performers than I had been when the evening started. We had a fabulous time harmonizing and backing each other up, and the audience loved it. One of my proudest performing moments. Thanks to Leslie Hogan, we now have a memento of this memorable evening, where we all mug for the camera as one Eric slyly reaches for the other Eric's wallet...

March

  • Saturday, March 20: At the Wessagussett Coffeehouse, UU Church of Weymouth, 83 Sea St. (Rte. 3 A), North Weymouth, MA, with MacIsaac & Ross and Chris Pahud & Phil Kissinger. Chris, Phil and I did a rousing version of Stan Rogers' "Barrett's Privateers", and somebody told me my material was "incredibly cool." A good evening, overall.

February

  • Wednesday, February 10: I received an emergency call from Anne Eder-Mulhane, inviting me to substitute for Colleen Sexton, whose case of laryngitis I had nothing to do with. I experienced almost instant gratification by sending out a last-minute gig e-mail which actually caused people to come. Ah, the power of marketing.

1998

December

  • Wednesday, December 16: I was featured in the New Faces showcase at Club Passim, 47 Palmer St., Harvard Square, Cambridge (phone (617) 492-7679), with Dave Dersham, Nathan Pyritz, adrianne, Brian T., Eric Schwartz, and Katie Barbado. We had a fabulous time - there was a good crowd at the end for my set, and we laughed and enjoyed great music. Thanks to all who came.

October

  • Wednesday, October 21: I appeared Dave Dersham and Harry Hussey (two very talented guys in their own right) at Mark's, 148 Northern Ave., in Boston, near the World Trade Center (phone (617) 542-2215). This concert was part of the Naked Voice Concert Series, organized by Amy Malkoff of Deadline Poet, and a former booker of the Nameless Coffeehouse. We had an excellent time, with a small but appreciative crowd.

August

  • Wednesday, August 5: I joined Dan Hart at "The Joint" on WBRS, the Brandeis radio station. This was a radio/live audience gig. We played for two hours, sounded great, nobody came. Hope you caught it on the radio.

July

  • Thursday, July 23: Dan Hart joined me at the Blue Note Exchange, 1626 Hancock St., Quincy, 02169 (617) 773-0444. We played for two hours, sounded great, nobody came.
  • Thursday, July 16: 11 AM at the Quincy street fair. I was the opening act of the fair. I drank a gallon of water and soaked a towel in the scorching heat. A little girl thought I was great - not many other people were listening...
  • Wednesday, July 8: Open mike feature at Java Jo's in East Milton Square. A whole lot of fun - Dave Dersham appeared, as did Chris Pahud and a host of others. Steve Rapson debuted his new singing partner, Maureen Keiller. I broke a string, and all was right with the world.

May

  • Saturday, May 16: Underwater Music project organized by James O'Brien, with James, me, Julian Russell, Summer Pierre, and Winterboy. At the Kendall Cafe in Kendall Square, Cambridge. This gig was a lot of fun - everybody played a strong set, and the crowd was into it.

1997

November

  • Wednesday, November 5: Open mike feature at Java Jo's in East Milton Square.
